Hong Kong – Pearl of the Orient
“Day 1 – Saturday I’m the kind of guy who is never lucky with prizes, freebies, etc. I’ve never won anything in any of the numerous D&Ds I’ve attended … not even if they were trying to make sure 75% of the people attending would be sure to win some sort of a prize, door gifts excluded. Hence when I was told that I was to be upgraded to Business Class on an overbooked UA flight, one might say ‘lucky chap, you …’ Those who know about such stuff would ask instead, ‘What? you mean you paid full fare??’ Well, whoever asks such a question is probably right. It’s not that I’m lucky. It’s a rather long story … and as I’ve said in my intro, buy me a drink if you want to hear this stupid boring story about my run-in with UA that resulted ultimately in this upgrade. 
Hence, I arrived at Hong Kong at about 11 am feeling rather fresh. Getting out of the Airport was also quite a breeze. Once out, I made sure I obtained an Octopus card (translink equilent in Singapore), which is really the way to go if you were to stay in Hong Kong for more than 2 days. Cheaper, and saves you the hassle of buying single trip tickets all the time, and it works on all modes of public transports – train, bus, ferry. Took a direct bus to Hotel Ibis which is next to Northpoint MTR station. Quite convenient. Dumped my stuff at the hotel room and met Philip at the hotel lobby at about 2pm. Philip had been very kind in offering to take me around for the day. We went to Causyway Bay, walked around the shopping area a little before having a late ‘yum cha’ lunch there with his girlfriend Judy and her friend Vivian. Can’t remember the name of the restaurant but it was good. Hong Kong is reknowned for the ‘tim sum’ that is served, termed ‘yum cha’, that lasts from late morning till late afternoon, and its generally very good. After lunch, they took me to Stanley, which is at the southern part of Hong Kong Island. The bus ride there was very scenic, as we pass the residential areas of the rich and famous of Hong Kong, as well as rounded Repulse Bay. Stanley – kind of like a nice coastal town, lined with some historical buildings and eateries / pubs along the beach. As you can see in my pictures, works are currently being carried out to extend the water front walkway. When finshed, it should be a very nice place for alfresco dining / drinks indeed. Add a few palm trees and I will start reminiscing of my time sipping sangria in Marbella. There’s also a nice market in Stanley where you can buy most of the things which you can find at temple street market and more, without the crowd. The ride back to town was also quite nice. We took a double decker bus via Tai Tam road which passed Tai Tam reservoir on the way back to central. Quite a scenic ride as well. Hence, I’ve kind of made a quick round round the whole of Hong Kong Island in a day. We settled for dinner at a Maxican restaurant called Caramba! along Elgin St in Soho, and finished up with a quick drink at Lam Kwai Fong which is a short walk away. Nice and relaxed way to start the trip, I must say, and I was very glad to have been able to be in good company of friends on the first day. Day 2 – Sunday Hong Kong was generally very cloudy during my whole trip there. It was also rather warm and humid. Average temperature was at the high 20s deg C in the day. It also rained frequently, like it did on this day. I started the day rather early at around 9-ish in the morning … well, that’s earlt by my standards. Took the MTR to Central station and walked around to see some sights like teh Hong Kong CityHall, Statue Square, Legislative Council Building and Charter Garden, etc. Read that this area was filled with foreign workers on weekends nowsdays. True enough, Charter garden resembled Lucky Plaza on a weekend. There was also a mass conducted outside the Legislative Council Building in honour of the ‘Foreign Workers Week’, hence the crowd gathered there was quite large. Had to run …”

Early morning view (you can hear the birds) looking East from my apartment in Futian District. Starts with a view of the Temple and Temple Garden below my apartment. It then pans South. Just South of the Temple wall you can see 10 or so small single story structures that are all that remains of the original village. Surrounding them are progressively taller and newer apartments as one looks South. Directly to the South one sees the green hills of Hong Kong.
As the video then pans around to the East and then North you can see a decent view of the Skyline with the mountains surrounding the town in the distance. The video in finally looking North shows the new Central Business District (a sort of new downtown …. although still in the making). The huge building in the foreground looking North is the Exhibition Center (only 1 km long!) and behind that is a series of sunken shopping centers (with Gardens on top) ending in the Gull-Winged roof of the city hall (you can see the yellow and red office towers holding up the roof – it looks small in the distance but is actually built on the same scale as the exhibition hall).
The buildings on either side of the Exhibition hall are between 50 and 60 stories high for scale. Meanwhile the smaller / older apartments below mine are more like the initial Shenzhen apartments – with 8 m2 per person and “handshake” alleys between them (called handshake alleys because you could reach across and shake hands with your neighbour).

“For those who do not know… I am currently studying abroad at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Clearwater Bay, Kowloon. I am taking some Business classes, Asian Studies classes and Putonghua. So far this experience has been inexplicable… I encourage all of you to study abroad, and if Hong Kong is where you want to go, I highly recommend you to study at this university. I was amazed by how beautiful the campus looked. Situated near Sai Cong, surrounded by the water and the mountains, the environment poses more of a study distraction than a study center. Outside my dorm window I see islands and a mass of blue water. I feel like I’m on resort and this 4 month exchange period is an imitation of Real World- Hong Kong. If you know me then you know that when school is in session, I’m MIA, hitting my books, and stressing over exams. However, my main prerogative right now, is to travel, travel and TRAVEL. Although I am taking 17 credits and still trying to graduate early I am taking my course load quite lightly. I thought HKUST classes will be a joke, but on the contrary, it is fairly difficult. However, some HKUST professors give some leeway to exchange students because they know of our travel agendas. There are about 200 exchange students at this program from all over the world. I hang out with students from the states, UK, Denmark, Poland, Sweden, Korea, Canada, and France… countries from all over Europe. We also have a buddy program in the College of Business. My two buddies, Gypsy and Joanna will be attending Lehigh next semester. They have been very helpful assisting my transition in this country. The first couple of weeks, I visited Stanley Market, Victoria’s Peak, and TST light show. I pretty much got used to the HK lifestyle pretty quickly. The MTR system here is fascinating; NYC should learn something from here. HK also has a thing called Octopus Card which is similar to our Metrocards but is much more convenient. We can swipe our Octopus Card at the local 7/11 or any other convenience store for quick purchases. Been doing the heavy duty partying at Lan Kwai Fong and Tribeca. Practically everyday is a weekend and theres always people going out. Shopping has been fun! I’ve been to Mong Kok’s Ladie’s Market, Temple Street shopping , eating local street food ”

The Chinese government has approved plans for a Disney theme park in Shanghai, the first of its kind in mainland China.
The approval by the National Development and Reform Commission will allow Shanghai, China’s biggest city, and Disney to work on final details for the amusement park, to be located in the city’s eastern Pudong district.
The news was met with general happiness by many local residents that own their land who are hoping to benefit from a generous buyout. Local residents are also hopeful that the development will bring new opportunities and business.
Others though, including business owners who rent and therefore stand to loose their businesses were not so welcoming.
The park will be a major showcase for Shanghai, the mainland’s main financial and commercial centre.
Disney’s theme park in Hong Kong has suffered disappointing attendance though, raising questions over the prospects for success in Shanghai.
