Hong Kong’s Racecourse District – Happy Valley

Happy Valley has a rich history behind its development. Happy Valley was previously called as the Wong Nai Chung Valley due to the river flowing through Wong Nai Chung Gap and the other neighboring areas. Till 1840, the area was pretty calm and quiet with the river aiding in the cultivation of the paddy fields. The British Army then settled down in the area comfortably until their soldiers began succumbing to a mystery fever, the then unknown malaria. After they wound up camp, it was suggested that the area be developed as a business center. The idea was later vetoed due to the fatal illnesses constantly being picked up from the marshy land. The valley started serving as a cemetery, as frequent deaths were quite common at that period in the area. Thus, the name Happy Valley stuck, which was a common euphemism in those days for a cemetery.

The valley was reborn when the British came up with the idea of horse racing in the area in 1846. The paddy fields were cleared and Wong Nai Chung was made to run through Browinton Canal which is still running to this day and can be seen under Canal Road.

There was no stopping the development of Happy Valley after the race course was built. Development of Happy Valley caused a real estate boom in Hong Kong and is still causing it to the present day. In the present day, it is one of the swanky residential areas with numerous glamorous restaurants and hotels bringing in a lot of Hong Kong celebrities and the paparazzi who follow them. Happy Valley also serves as sets for filming countless Hong Kong television series. Hong Kong’s two of the tallest residential buildings, Highcliff and The Summit is housed in Happy Valley.

Happy Valley is now home to the Hong Kong Racing Museum, the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, the Hong Kong Cemetery along with other cemeteries and the Happy Valley Athletic Association.

Besides Happy Valley, Hong Kong has so much to offer and while staying at your hotel Hong Kong, you can ask the concierge for a recommended itinerary. Hotel Jen is particularly suitable if you intend to spend several nights in Hong Kong.
