Thousands in Hong Kong March for Democracy

Moving on to Hong Kong where an estimated 76 thousand people marched through through city streets Thursday, calling for swifter democratic reforms, poverty alleviation and investor rights protection. The protest marks the 12th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from British to Chinese rule. The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the territory’s leader, Donald Tsang, saying he is hindering democratic progress and has made bad policy choices amidst the global economic slowdown.

The theme of this year’s July 1 march was closing the wealth gap, improving people’s livelihood, focusing on policy errors and handing power to the people.

Organizers asked those participating to wear white clothes to show they are determined to fight for democracy.

They held banners and shouted slogans accusing Chief Executive Donald Tsang of collusion between business and government and hindering Hong Kong’s democracy, human rights and law.

[Mr. Li, Hong Kong Resident]:
“Many policies don’t reflect the will of the people. It’s only big business that benefits… the government only cares about big business.”

[Mr. Chan, Hong Kong Resident]:
“The performance of officials is terrible. The words said by the people in power are just ridiculous. They say one thing then deny it later. I came out because I am patriotic, but I do not love the Communist Party.”

[Mr. Tsang, Hong Kong Resident]:
“I am not satisfied with the Communist Party’s human rights policies.”

[Mr. Tsand, Hong Kong Resident]:
“The Chinese Communists and the wealthy businessmen. These two groups of people. We have to fight for democracy.”

Parents bought their children, and some retired politicians also took part.

Former Legislative Council member for the Democracy Party Martin Lee, says July 1 is the best time to fight for democracy.

[Martin Lee, Former Legis. Council Member, Democracy Party]:
“We should fight for democracy not just for Hong Kong’s people, but also for those in mainland China. In fact, many of them also want to come and march as we do, but they cannot. We Hong Kong people have to help the people in mainland China and walk towards Democracy together.”

Former Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan, says the government should stop delaying general elections.

[Anson Chan, Former Chief Secretary for Administration]:
“People are very eager for a quicker pace towards democracy. The government should show their sincerity, consult with the public, and pave the way to achieve universal sufferage by 2017 or 2020.”

Falun Gong practitioners also joined the March, as July 1 is also World Quit the Communist Party Day. They called on mainland Chinese to renounce their Communist Party membership, saying true democracy could only be possible once the Communist Party is gone.

A group of about 130 protesters were forcefully removed from the city’s government headquarters after ignoring police warnings to leave.

Hong Kong Hotel Reopens After H1N1 Quarantine

One hotel that has made headlines is back in business today. The Metropark hotel in Hong Kong re-opens to the public after hundreds of guests and hotel staff were quarantined there due to a swine flu scare.

Hong Kong’s Metropark hotel opens its doors to guests with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and cocktail reception. Around 300 people were released last Friday from seven days quarantine in the hotel, after a Mexican guest tested positive for the H1N1 virus. The hotel remained closed for a week of extensive cleaning and disinfecting. Despite attractive discounts of up to 50 percent off, some guests like James Wellings were not informed the hotel had been closed. [James Wellings, Metropark Guest]: “I booked on the internet and when I arrived yesterday the place was closed up. And I hadn’t heard about it because I’d been in Thailand for some weeks.” But Wellings says he likes the hotel and has no concerns about staying there. [James Wellings, Metropark Guest]: “Well I imagine it’s been very well cleaned, so I’m quite happy.” Metropark Hotel general manager Evan Chiu says the hotel has been given a clean bill of health after rigorous checks. [Evan Chiu, Metropark Hotel Manager]: “So after the deputy director from the health department inspected the hotel, he sent a letter telling us we can reopen for business.” Local businesses near the hotel hope the reopening will allow them to get back to business as usual.

Life of Sun Shiang Law Chang ??????????

Our Mother, Sun Shiang Law Chang was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China on November 2, 1920, and went with our Lord at 6:40AM on August 8, 2007.

Mother married our father, Lien Shui Chang, on January 6, 1937. She is survived by five sons, three daughters, five daughters-in-law, three sons-in-law, 18 grand-children and five great grand-children. In 1946, Mother followed her husband and moved from Ningbo to Shanghai. After the Chinese liberation in 1950, both relocated to Hong Kong with their eldest son Wo Tat. In 1968, our father first went to the Bahamas for business, leaving Mother to raise all eight children alone in Hong Kong. In 1970, she joined our father to the Bahamas. Three years later, the entire family immigrated to Miami, United States and then to Maryland in 1978.

Mother was a quiet, kind, generous, hard-working lady. She loved her husband and children immensely. She enjoyed big family gatherings and loved to cook for the grand children, making sure their stomachs were never half empty. Despite her illiteracy, Mother was always eager to learn how to read and write. While her husband was away in the Bahamas, she enjoyed reading his letters and writing to him. Mother was a very hospitable person, always serving others first. Throughout her entire life, she was always the last to eat, and many times, she even went hungry without food.

In her early years, Mother had always been loyal to worshipping Buddha and other Chinese gods. Upon coming to America, Mother was brought along to church on one occasion. During the service, she felt touched by the hymns, learning that all her burdens could be cast onto Jesus. On that day in 1977, she accepted Christ Jesus into her heart as her personal Lord and Savior. Since then, her faith has been continually strengthened through the consistency of her prayer life. Mother’s favorite songs were Amazing Grace and ????. She particularly enjoyed the Joyful Fellowship with other brothers and sisters at church and looked forward to Sunday worship. Her biggest desire is for her entire family, including son/daughter-in-laws, grandchildren, and future generations, to come to know the Lord.

In the early 2000s, Mother suffered a debilitating foot problem, inhibiting her ability to walk, and causing her health to begin deteriorating. This incident led her to become bed-bound, and in 2005, she was placed in a nursing home. On August 6, Mother was admitted to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for pneumonia, and then two days later, at 6:40AM, she went peacefully with the Lord.

We all miss you Mom and Grandma! We’re looking forward to seeing you one day in Heaven!

AIRLINE TRAVEL & AIRPORTS: Korean Air to Hong Kong

My journey to Hong Kong from Manila via Incheon on board Korean Air B777-300 and B747-400E.

Yup, it’s a long route alright. More than 7 hours trip compared to a 2 hour direct flight from Manila.

It’s on business class anyway; I didn’t mind.

Some shots are a bit shaky. Took it with a Nokia N70.

Features take offs and landings, Korean Air flight attendants, and the bibimbap!
