What is your opinion on Jackie Chan’s Comments about Chinese people needing to be controled & cared for?

WOW… My first reaction to reading what he said was just "WOW…"

Chinese people need to be "Controlled" or else they will "Just do what they want"?

Um… yeah… Isn’t that the point?

I guess all those stunts and head wounds have finally caught up with him…

What do you think about what he said?

Jackie Chan’s China comments prompt backlash (AP)

HONG KONG – Action star Jackie Chan ‘s comments wondering whether Chinese people "need to be controlled" have drawn sharp rebuke in his native Hong Kong and in Taiwan .

Chan told a business forum in the southern Chinese province of Hainan that a free society may not be beneficial for China ‘s authoritarian mainland.

"I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not," Chan said Saturday. "I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we’re not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want."

He went on to say that freedoms in Hong Kong and Taiwan made those societies "chaotic."

Chan’s comments drew applause from a predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders, but did not sit well with lawmakers in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

"He’s insulted the Chinese people. Chinese people aren’t pets," Hong Kong pro-democracy legislator Leung Kwok-hung told The Associated Press. "Chinese society needs a democratic system to protect human rights and rule of law."

Another lawmaker, Albert Ho, called the comments "racist," adding: "People around the world are running their own countries. Why can’t Chinese do the same?"

Former British colony Hong Kong enjoys Western-style civil liberties and some democratic elections under Chinese rule. Half of its 60-member legislature is elected, with the other half picked by special interest groups. But Hong Kong’s leader is chosen by a panel stacked with Beijing loyalists.

In democratically self-ruled Taiwan, which split from mainland China during a civil war in 1949, legislator Huang Wei-che said Chan himself "has enjoyed freedom and democracy and has reaped the economic benefits of capitalism. But he has yet to grasp the true meaning of freedom and democracy."

Chan’s comments were reported by news outlets in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but were ignored by the mainland Chinese press.

Although Chan was a fierce critic of the brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in June 1989, which killed at least hundreds, he has not publicly criticized China’s government in recent years and is immensely popular on the mainland.

He performed during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and took part in the Olympic torch relay .

Chan also is vice chairman of the China Film Association, a key industry group.

wow…..keep em coming, and keep putting other peoples questions down, I read a couple of your answers and you are not nice….WOW

I was thinking about studying abroad in Honk Kong for a business minor. Should i go for it?

I am an electrical engineering major and i really want to travel somewhere before i graduate in two more years. The City University of Hong Kong offers many business classes and i was thinking about minoring in business because it might help me out later in life.

So essentially i have two questions:

1) Should i go to China to study abroad for one semester?

2) Should I get a minor in business if i am majoring in electrical engineering?

thank you.

I see no reason you should not go to Hong Kong to take some business courses for one semester although it is unlikely you could complete a minor because advanced business courses have prerequisites. Don’t go to mainland China as courses there would be given in Chinese.

If you have an interest in business, go ahead and take it. Even if you don’t use it professionally, it will be an asset to you personally.

The only possible problem I can see is that taking one semester off might throw off your sequence in engineering studies. Be sure to talk with your college adviser about this.

Recycling my Jokes – Hong Kong Dong =) Is this funny?

A lonely business man was on his way back to the U.S.

Upon arriving at the hotel where he was to spend his last night in Hong Kong, he was approached by a prostitute. The man quickly agreed to sleep with the woman and they spent a night filled with passion.

His flight back to the U.S. was quick and comfortable.

–2 days later–

The man had severe itching and minor pains in his groin area so he decided to visit the doctor.

Upon inspection, his penis was turning rather blue.

"I’m sorry, but you’re suffering from Hong Kong Dong" , the doctor said, "We’re going to have to cut it off".

"No! There must be another way!", the man begged.

The man went to several other doctors, desperate to find a way. All of them suggested cutting the organ off

Finally, he had an idea.
"This is an Asian disease, so I should speak with an Asian doctor! He would know what to do!"

So the man went to Chinatown and spoke with a Chinese Doctor.

–continued–
"Oh no worries, we no have to cut it off" The Chinese doctor t old him.

"THANK GOD!!" Exclaimed the man.

"In 3 or 4 days, it fall off" Said the doctor

LOL. NEVER Swim in Strange Waters….! LOL.

Thanks for the laughs, and have a great day!

Is this email a scam?

I’ve got this email from this guy. It really looks fishy but I have no idea what he is on about. Here is the email:

Dear PARTNER,

I am Mr. Vincent Cheng Hoi Chuen, GBS, JP Chairman of Hang Seng Bank
in Hong Kong .

I have a business proposal for you. My client BRIGADIER AMER ALI NAYEF a
Businessman, and a Merchant in Middle East, made a fixed deposit for millions
of united States Dollars for 18 months in my bank.

Upon maturity several notices were sent to him. It was later discovered that
he and his entire family were killed in the war leaving no heir/family member tothese fund. According to the laws of my country at the expiration 3 years which hascurrently exceeded, the funds will revert to the ownership of the Hong Kong Government if nobody applies to claim the funds.

I have already succeeded in transferring the funds out of my country to
an online bank awaiting claims for an heir with same surname(where you
come in) to help me apply to take custody of the funds, my proposal is to put
you as next of kin and have the funds released to you from the online
bank for a share in the ratio 50% each. All paper works would be put in
place from my end to ensure a legal inheritance.

However I await your response and assurance that you can be of
partnership with me in making the project a reality. Should you be
interested; in executing this proposal with me; please kindly reply me
with your full name and current address and telephone number on my

How does an American citizen start a business in Hong Kong?

I am a 27 year old Bus Admin graduate working in San Francisco. I studied in Hong Kong with an exchange program for 6 months and got some business ideas that I think would be very successful there. However, I don’t know what the first step would be to start a business there. I have little to no capital, but I know how to do a Business Plan for these great ideas. I have acquaintences in HK but no one that would be close enough to ask for too much assistance. Any insight would be very appreciated.

I think first you need to Secure some capital. In the sense, find out how much of a loan you can get from an American Bank. Second take a trip to HK and tour actively searching for businesses that are already doing what you want to do. Figure out simply weather or not your business is better in it’s product, or is different and still be wanted by the locals.

Starting up a business anywhere takes time, and research. HK is a great place to consider having a business for many reasons.

Also look into the US tax laws, I am Canadian, but heard from an American friend working in DC, that Americans earning money in HK are subject to taxes in HK as well as the US.

My advice is for you to raise capital, and really research it. there are Lots of HK government sites that are. However I found this useful: http://www.doingbusiness.org/ExploreEconomies/?economyid=43
